Finding Fulfillment: Aligning Your Strengths with Your Career

It’s a common dilemma: should you pursue a career based on your passion or focus on something that aligns with your strengths and offers better job security? Many of us do not work in fields that align with our passions, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find fulfillment in our professional lives. Here’s how you can align your strengths with your career to achieve both success and satisfaction.

1. Recognize the Reality of Working Your Passion

Most people do not work their passion. Instead, they find fulfillment in hobbies and family outside of work. For example, I have a deep love for history but chose to major in economics and enter the business world due to better pay and job demand. I satisfy my passion for history by reading and listening to books and podcasts after work. This balance allows me to enjoy both my professional and personal life.

2. Identify Your Core Strengths

The first step in aligning your career with your strengths is to identify what those strengths are. Are you a high-level thinker, a relationship builder, or someone who excels in strategic planning? Knowing your strengths can help you determine the type of roles that would suit you best. For instance, I realized I was not a “doer” but excelled in relationship building and strategic planning. This self-awareness led me to a fulfilling career in business development.

3. Align Functionally and by Industry

Once you know your strengths, you can align them with functional roles and industries that suit you. For example, I work in business development within the healthcare industry. This role allows me to leverage my strengths while also aligning with my altruistic values. I consult and sell solutions to non-profit hospitals, which ultimately helps patient well-being. This balance ensures I sleep well at night knowing I’m making a positive impact while thriving in my career.

4. Consider Work-Life Balance (WLB) and Motivation

When choosing a career, consider what you truly want in terms of work-life balance (WLB) and what motivates you the most. It’s important to find a job that not only leverages your strengths but also fits your lifestyle and drives. You can often find a functional job that suits you in any industry. The key is to choose an industry that aligns with your personal drive and code of ethics.

5. Set Yourself Up for Success

Aligning your strengths with your career sets you up for success. Working purely out of passion doesn’t always lead to a dream job. In my experience in healthcare, I’ve seen doctors and nurses burned out from their day-to-day responsibilities. They pursued their passion for helping people but were unprepared for the job’s realities. This highlights the importance of being purposeful in your career choices.

6. Leverage Natural Skills and Interests

Focus on how to leverage your natural skills and interests rather than chasing a passion that might not be sustainable as a career. Identify what you are good at and what you enjoy doing. Then, look for jobs and industries where these skills and interests can be applied effectively. This approach can lead to a more fulfilling and sustainable career.

7. Explore Various Industries

Don’t limit yourself to one industry. Your strengths and skills can often be applied across various fields. For example, business development skills are valuable in healthcare, technology, education, and more. Explore different industries to find the one that best matches your personal and professional goals.

8. Be Open to Change

Be open to changing your career path if you find that your current role or industry no longer aligns with your strengths or fulfills you. It’s never too late to pivot and pursue a path that better suits your evolving skills and interests. Continuous self-assessment and flexibility can lead to long-term career satisfaction.

9. Seek Continuous Learning

Invest in continuous learning and development to enhance your strengths and stay competitive in your chosen field. Whether through formal education, online courses, or self-directed learning, gaining new skills and knowledge can open up more opportunities and help you advance in your career.

10. Build a Support Network

Finally, build a support network of mentors, colleagues, and professionals in your industry. They can provide valuable insights, guidance, and opportunities that align with your strengths and career goals. Networking can also help you stay informed about industry trends and best practices.
